Ander Herrera’s Sixth Injury Strikes a Blow to Boca Juniors
Ander Herrera suffers another injury at Boca Juniors and will be out for at least two weeks
Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera has suffered another muscle injury and will be sidelined for at least two weeks, Boca Juniors confirmed in recent hours. It is the sixth injury the player has sustained since joining the club in January 2025.
“Ander Herrera has a Grade 1 muscle injury to the rectus anterior muscle of the right thigh,” the club said in an official statement. The 36-year-old midfielder has been ruled out of matches against Vélez Sarsfield and Platense, and is also doubtful for the game against Racing Club in Argentina’s Torneo Apertura.
The injury comes after a strong start to the 2026 season, with the former Athletic Club player starting two of the team’s first three matches. After renewing his contract at the end of 2025, Herrera had become an important piece in the midfield of Claudio Úbeda’s team, forming a partnership with Argentina international Leandro Paredes.
Zeballos also joins the injury list
Boca’s medical report also confirmed an injury to Exequiel Zeballos, who suffered a Grade 2–3 tear of the left biceps femoris. The forward is expected to be sidelined for three to four matches.
The situation is another setback for Boca, which currently has several attacking players injured, including Edinson Cavani, Miguel Merentiel, Carlos Palacios, Milton Giménez, Lucas Janson, and Alan Velasco.
At the start of the Torneo Apertura, Boca defeated Deportivo Riestra 1–0, then lost 2–1 to Estudiantes de La Plata, and last weekend beat Newell’s Old Boys 2–0 at La Bombonera, a result that left the team in fourth place in Zone A.
