What Will Barcelona Do If They Don’t Sign Julián Álvarez?

Despite still targeting the Argentine striker, Barcelona don’t want to be left without a No. 9 following Robert Lewandowski’s departure.

Barcelona still view Julián Álvarez as their top target to strengthen the attack, but Atlético de Madrid’s stance is making the deal increasingly difficult. The Argentine has even returned to training and completed his preseason medical tests with the Rojiblancos.

With Robert Lewandowski’s departure, Barcelona need a new attacking leader, and sporting director Deco is already working on several alternatives.

Who Could Barcelona Target If the Julián Álvarez Deal Falls Through?

If Álvarez’s transfer ultimately falls apart, Lautaro Martínez is one of Barcelona’s most highly rated alternatives, according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

The Inter Milan striker has previously been on Barcelona’s radar, and his profile fits what Hansi Flick is looking for: mobility, link-up play and goals.

The deal would also be complicated, as the Argentine is a key player for the Italian side and his contract situation could significantly increase his transfer price. Some reports value him at around €120 million ($139 million).

Osimhen, Guirassy and Other Names on Barcelona’s List

Lautaro would not be the only alternative. Barcelona have also considered several other strikers if Álvarez becomes unattainable, including Victor Osimhen, Serhou Guirassy and Dušan Vlahović.

Other names, such as Harry Kane and João Pedro, have also emerged in different transfer scenarios, although both would be more difficult options than Álvarez.

Osimhen stands out for his power and goalscoring ability, while Guirassy offers a different profile and could represent a more affordable option. João Pedro has also been monitored by Barcelona, although his situation has become more complicated.

Barcelona Need to Replace Lewandowski

The search for a new striker has become even more important following Lewandowski’s departure, as Barcelona do not want to enter Flick’s new project without an elite No. 9.

Álvarez remains the preferred target, but Atlético have made it clear they have no intention of making his departure easy. The Madrid club have reportedly rejected offers of €100 million, €150 million and even €200 million, according to Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, as reported by Spanish newspaper AS.

For now, Barcelona have several options: Julián Álvarez is the dream target, Lautaro Martínez is one of the leading Plan B options, while Osimhen, Guirassy, Vlahović and João Pedro remain alternatives if the priority deal becomes impossible.

The final decision will depend on both Barcelona’s sporting plans and their financial ability to sign a new star striker.
