The Messi Ally Barcelona Is Targeting to Improve Its Defense
Cristián Romero (27) has decided to seek a new challenge in June, despite being under contract with Tottenham Hotspur until 2029 and serving as the club’s captain. While months ago he was linked with Diego Simeone’s Atlético de Madrid, his name is now being mentioned in England as a potential target for FC Barcelona. It would not be the first time — years ago, the Catalan club tracked him closely and even made an approach.
The reason the specialized outlet TALKteam has once again highlighted Barcelona’s interest is the tension between the defender and Tottenham’s board.
“Great effort from all my teammates yesterday — they were incredible,” Cristian Romero wrote on Instagram after a Premier League match. “I wanted to be available to help them even though I wasn’t feeling well, especially because we only had 11 players available. Incredible, but true and embarrassing.” In Argentina, reports have also linked him with a possible move to LaLiga.
One of the reasons behind Barcelona’s past interest, according to reports from previous seasons, was advice from Lionel Messi. At the time, it was said the Argentine star had specifically requested the signing to strengthen the defense. Barcelona reportedly made an offer of 47 million plus 11 million in add-ons, although Messi later denied making that request.
