Sergio Dest Dreams of a Possible Return to Barcelona After Seasons Away From the Club.
After shining at PSV and overcoming his injury, he keeps in touch with former teammates and hopes for another opportunity
The debate about a possible "end of an era" at FC Barcelona is back on the table, and one of the names that comes up in that conversation is Sergiño Dest. The American full-back, who joined the club in 2020 from Ajax with the label of a future project, never managed to establish himself as an undisputed starter. After an irregular stint, he was first loaned to Milan and then to PSV Eindhoven, where he eventually signed permanently and had a great season.
Interest from both sides
In an interview with NPO Radio, Dest left the door open for a return to Barça: "Signing for Barça would still be a dream. Hansi Flick's playing style is incredible. I think he would fit in well," he assured. The defender, who has overcome a serious knee injury, believes he is ready to take a leap in his career and compete in a more competitive league. "I want to improve every week in a more important league and measure myself against the best," he added, although he clarified that for now, nothing is concrete: "There is interest from the clubs, but there's still a long way to go."
The bond with the Catalan club has not completely broken. Dest mentioned that he keeps in touch with some former teammates and that the assessment of him remains positive. "I spoke with Araujo some time ago after the match between the United States and Uruguay, and we had a good chat. He told me that he and Frenkie sometimes say they don't understand why they sold me, that I would fit in well here," he recounted.
His present at PSV
Meanwhile, PSV is enjoying his performance and the player is grateful, but he does not hide that his sights are set higher. At just 25 years old, Dest still dreams of wearing the blue and claret jersey again and proving that his cycle in Barcelona is not entirely over.
