Barcelona Locks Down Fermín López Until 2031: All the Details on His Contract Renewal
FC Barcelona have reinforced their commitment to Fermín López. The Andalusian attacking midfielder has extended his contract with the club by two more seasons, until June 30, 2031, the Catalan side announced on Friday.
With this renewal, Barça secure one of the key players in their sporting project. Fermín had already signed a contract extension in October 2024 until 2029, including a €500 million release clause, and has now been rewarded again for his continued progression.
Since making his first-team debut in August 2023 under Xavi Hernández, the player from El Campillo (Huelva) has featured in 113 official matches, scoring 29 goals and providing 19 assists, numbers that highlight his growing influence at the top level.
His performances for Barcelona also earned him a call-up to the Spanish national team, making his debut in June 2024 and becoming a regular in Luis de la Fuente’s squads.
A key figure under Hansi Flick
This season — the second under Hansi Flick — Fermín has already reached double figures with 10 goals and 10 assists, firmly establishing himself as an important part of the team.
That progress came despite serious interest last August, when he was tempted by a lucrative offer from Chelsea. The midfielder chose to stay and continue his development at Barcelona.
A difficult road to the elite
The contract extension also rewards a journey defined by patience and perseverance. Fermín first stood out at Recreativo de Huelva before joining Real Betis, and eventually moving to La Masia at just 15 years old.
His early years at Barcelona were far from easy. He struggled physically compared to his teammates, lacked power in his shooting, and was not a regular starter at youth levels — earning him the nickname “Fermín the little one.”
Everything changed at youth-team level. He grew both physically and tactically, scored the title-winning goal in the 2021–22 Youth League, renewed his contract, and earned promotion to Barça Atlètic.
To continue his development, the club arranged a loan move to Linares in Spain’s Primera RFEF, where he excelled with 12 goals and four assists, convincing Xavi Hernández once and for all.
At just 20 years old, Xavi brought him back after watching him in only a couple of training sessions. Even though Fermín was not originally included in the squad for the U.S. tour, the coach gave him a chance and put him on the plane.
That decision changed his career. Today, Fermín López is a valuable piece of Hansi Flick’s Barcelona, and one of the club’s most promising players — now tied down until 2031.
