Barcelona Forced to Choose Between Two Defenders
The FC Barcelona wants to strengthen its defense and already has two clear targets in sight. However, due to the club’s financial situation, it will have to choose only one.
The Defensive Dilemma
Hansi Flick is looking to solidify the back line ahead of next season, an area that has caused many problems throughout the campaign. For this reason, the sporting department is already working on two center-backs who fit the coach’s vision.
The main target is Alessandro Bastoni, a key figure at Inter Milan. The Italian defender is highly rated for his profile: left-footed, strong in build-up play, and capable of operating in a high defensive line—exactly what Flick demands in his system.
The biggest obstacle is his price. His transfer fee would be around €80 million, and he is under contract with Inter until 2028. One option that has been considered is including players in the deal to lower the cost, but the Italian club is already working on a contract renewal, which further complicates any negotiation.
Alternatives and Financial Limitations
Given this scenario, Plan B emerges: Luka Vušković. At Barcelona, his youth, potential, and versatility are highly valued, as he can play both as a center-back and a full-back. His speed and game awareness make him an ideal fit for Flick’s system.
The Croatian is enjoying an excellent season with Hamburg, which has increased his market value. In 26 matches, he has scored five goals and provided one assist—impressive numbers for a defender. However, his situation is also complex: he belongs to Tottenham, a club he is contracted with until 2030, and after his performances, they may decide to keep him. His price would be around €50 million.

The main issue for Barcelona remains Financial Fair Play. The club has yet to reach the 1:1 rule and still carries a deficit of around €12 million. Although the situation has improved, it still cannot approach deals of this magnitude with full freedom.
The board, led by Joan Laporta, aims to balance the books in order to negotiate with greater flexibility and plan next season more clearly.
Time, however, is not on their side. Inter could renew Bastoni at any moment, while Vušković is also attracting interest from other European clubs. In addition, Tottenham considers him an important piece for its future.
Barcelona will have to make a decision soon.
Will they be able to sign one of the two?
