Tebas on Valencia Tragedy: “The Best Message Is Not to Stop, But to Be on the Front Lines”
From Matchday 12 in LaLiga, only the Valencia-Real Madrid and Villarreal-Rayo Vallecano games have been postponed, while the rest of the fixtures remain as scheduled.
LaLiga President Javier Tebas defended the organization’s decision to continue with this weekend's fixtures despite the tragedy caused by a DANA storm in Spain. Tebas stated that "the best message is not to stop" but rather "to be on the front lines in our jobs" like other sectors, helping to "give visibility" to those affected.
In a message on his X account, Tebas shared this view after several coaches, including Atlético de Madrid’s Diego Simeone and Barcelona’s Hansi Flick, suggested that suspending the matches would have been a better show of solidarity with those impacted by the severe flooding, which has claimed over 200 lives.
“We believe that in the terrible situation Spain is currently facing, the best message is not to stop, except in affected areas. The best message is to be on the front lines in our jobs, like workers in other sectors, providing visibility, generating resources, and showing the world that we must unite and take action to move forward,” expressed the LaLiga President.
Tebas shared a LaLiga video alongside his message, highlighting that “in the face of the worst storm of the century in Spain, we need everyone’s best efforts, help, and solidarity.” The video also urges the public to donate to the Red Cross to support those affected.
