Hansi Flick Accepts His Mistake and Talks About His Behavior
For once, Flick, known for being very reserved in press conferences, broke from his usual script and shared his opinion on matters beyond football tactics.
The German coach Hansi Flick addressed this Saturday the red card he received against Betis, which has resulted in a two-match suspension. He admitted that "maybe" he needs to work on his behavior, although he also expressed his desire for "referees to whistle the same way, not just against Barcelona."
When asked about his sending-off against Betis and whether he thought the suspension was fair, the German coach elaborated on the topic.
"I think my reaction wasn’t the best, that’s clear, I was just being myself (...). At the start of the season, I told my staff not to complain about the referees because I don’t want us to waste energy on things we can’t change," Flick stated.
"For me, it has been challenging; I’m in a different league, I’ve just arrived, and they already showed me a red card. I accept the suspension; maybe I need to work on my behavior. I just want referees to whistle the same way, not just against Barça," he emphasized.
Flick Reflects on His Behavior
Hansi Flick shared that he always tells his players they must accept the referees' decisions and focus on playing, recognizing and praising his team for not complaining about the officiating.
"The team’s behavior is fantastic; it’s different compared to a few years ago, and this is the philosophy: we must focus on what we can improve. Referees can also improve. In the end, we are all human beings, and we make mistakes. I accept the red card; I know I need to improve my reactions, and that is my responsibility," Flick affirmed.
Regarding Sunday’s match, the coach asked his players to stay "100% focused" against a rival that will look to exploit Barcelona's weaknesses. "Everything depends on us," he stated.
Flick also provided updates on the status of players who may return, such as Ronald Araujo, Ansu Fati, and Andreas Christensen. About the Uruguayan defender, he revealed the plan is for him to play a few minutes. "I don’t know how many; he might start or he might not, but he’s ready to play," he said.
Regarding Ansu Fati, who has been injured for a month, and Christensen, who hasn’t played since late August, he noted both are making positive progress.
While he didn’t confirm whether there will be rotations in the starting lineup, the coach clarified that his team is fully focused on the match against Leganés, not on next week’s game against Atlético de Madrid.
"Sunday’s match is against Leganés, and I have to make decisions. We have players of great quality, and it could be that there are some rotations," added Flick.
On his substitute for Sunday’s match, the coach mentioned his assistant Marcus Sorg, whom he described as a coach "with a lot of experience and knowledge" and someone he has "full confidence in."
