Barcelona Earns Millions from Nico González's Transfer to Manchester City

  • The former Barça youth player's transfer to Guardiola's City has brought millions to the club.

Do you know that feeling when you find a forgotten bill in a jacket or a pair of pants? Unexpected money—like a gift, right? Well, that’s exactly what happened to Barcelona at the end of this January transfer window.

The Catalan club received a surprise financial boost following Nico González’s transfer to Manchester City.

The Cityzens wrapped up a transfer window in which they invested heavily to strengthen Pep Guardiola’s squad. Specifically, they spent $62 million on the Porto midfielder.

However, not all of that money will go to the Portuguese club. When Barcelona sold their academy graduate to Porto, they smartly included a clause securing 40% of any resale profit—which initially meant $20.6 million.

But Barça won’t pocket the full amount. Porto had previously bought 20% of the resale profit Barcelona was entitled to for $3.1 million. This means the Catalans will now receive only 20% of the $62 million transfer fee.

In total, Barcelona will collect:

  • $10.6 million from their remaining 20% share.
  • $3.1 million from selling the other 20% earlier.

That brings Barça’s earnings from Nico González’s move to $13.7 million—an unexpected windfall, just like finding that forgotten bill, and a much-needed boost to the club’s struggling finances.
