A Failure Named Mauricio Pochettino: Four Straight Losses for the United States
The U.S. Men's National Team is in crisis just one year before the 2026 World Cup after a heavy defeat to Switzerland marked their fourth consecutive loss under the Argentine coach.
Pochettino explained that the plan was to give minutes to the full roster, but admitted that the strategy backfired: “Everything that could go wrong did. We were never in the match.”
Despite the poor first half, he praised his players’ second-half attitude: “I liked the personality the team showed after the break,” he noted. However, pressure is mounting, and Pochettino’s record of five wins and five losses since taking over last October is now under intense scrutiny.
The U.S. faced these friendlies without key players like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Tim Weah, which impacted their performance. Now, all eyes turn to the upcoming Gold Cup, where the U.S. will open their campaign against Trinidad and Tobago on June 15 at PayPal Park in San Jose, California.
That tournament will be a critical test for Pochettino’s project as time runs out to solidify an identity and competitive edge ahead of the most important tournament in U.S. soccer history.
