The Italy national team is going through one of the most difficult periods in its recent history. Now under Gennaro Gattuso, the Azzurri are fighting to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup.
Why is Italy in crisis and at risk of missing another World Cup?
After missing the last two tournaments, a third absence would be a historic setback.
Two major failures and another looming threat
Gattuso has taken on the role of a firefighter, trying to fix what Roberto Mancini and Luciano Spalletti could not.
Italy failed to overcome Erling Haaland’s Norway and now face two decisive matches.
They must first beat Northern Ireland and then face the winner of Wales vs Bosnia. Failure would mean missing a third consecutive World Cup.
Instability and squad concerns
Gattuso’s squad has faced criticism due to inconsistent performances from players like Gianluigi Donnarumma, as well as the mix of veterans and emerging talents.
Players such as Marco Verratti and young prospect Marco Palestra highlight a transition phase still in progress.
Meanwhile, Federico Chiesa has struggled for form and fitness, adding to concerns.
Frequent managerial changes have also contributed to instability, with names like Antonio Conte, Ventura, Mancini and Spalletti all involved in recent years.
"The pressure is enormous," Gattuso admitted.

Buffon points to identity issues
Legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon identified a loss of identity as a key factor behind Italy’s struggles.
“We’ve tried to play like Spain for years, but that’s not who we are. We used to excel in defense and specialization,” he said.
Buffon also noted that modern players lack the defensive specialization that once defined Italian football.
