The Lowest-Ranked Teams Qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the biggest in history. For the first time ever, 48 national teams will compete in a tournament hosted across three countries: Mexico, United States, and Canada. Alongside the traditional powerhouses and title contenders, there will also be teams arriving as the tournament’s lowest-ranked sides. Some will look to shock the world, while others simply hope to compete and make history.
These are the lowest-ranked national teams qualified for the World Cup and the difficult road awaiting them.
5. Bosnia and Herzegovina
The “Dragons” sit at No. 65 in the FIFA World Ranking, making them the lowest-ranked UEFA team in this World Cup. Their qualification was one of the biggest surprises of the European qualifiers, eliminating none other than Italy, four-time world champions.
Bosnia and Herzegovina once reached No. 13 in the FIFA rankings back in 2013, the best period in the nation’s history, but they have declined significantly since then. Still, their group could offer hope: Canada (27), Switzerland (17), and Qatar (51). On paper, it is an accessible group, and Bosnia and Herzegovina could become one of the lowest-ranked teams ever to reach the knockout stage.
4. Ghana
The “Black Stars” are going through a rebuilding phase. Ghana currently sits at No. 74 in the FIFA rankings, far from the golden generation that climbed as high as No. 14 in the world in 2008.
The challenge will be enormous. They will share a group with Panama (33), England (4), and Croatia (11). The experience and quality of their opponents make Ghana one of the teams facing the toughest road in the entire group stage.

3. Curaçao
“The Blue Wave” will make its World Cup debut after a historic qualifying campaign. They advanced unbeaten and finished ahead of teams such as Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.
Currently ranked No. 82 in the FIFA standings, they have never cracked the Top 50. Their highest-ever ranking was No. 68. Even during their days as the Netherlands Antilles, they never achieved major international success.
Their World Cup debut will be brutal: they open against Germany (10), then face Ecuador (23), and close the group stage against Ivory Coast (34). A true baptism by fire for “The Blue Wave.”
2. Haiti
“Les Grenadiers” produced one of the most unexpected qualification runs of the entire cycle. Haiti advanced from a group featuring Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua, returning to the World Cup for the first time since West Germany 1974.
They currently occupy No. 83 in the FIFA rankings, although they climbed as high as No. 38 in 2013 thanks to strong performances in the Caribbean Cup.
The World Cup challenge will not be easy. They will face Scotland (43), then take on Brazil (6), the five-time world champions, before closing against Morocco (8), the historic semifinalists from Qatar 2022.
1. New Zealand
The “All Whites” have dominated Oceania for years, yet they still arrive as the lowest-ranked team in the entire World Cup at No. 85 in the FIFA rankings.
Their highest-ever position was No. 47 in 2002, but they have lost ground internationally ever since. Despite that, they remain Oceania’s top football power.
Their group will be extremely difficult. They open against Iran (21), then face Egypt (29), before closing the group stage against Belgium (9).
If New Zealand manages to reach the knockout stage, it would break a historic record: they would become the lowest-ranked FIFA team ever to advance to the World Cup knockout rounds. The current record belongs to Russia, which reached the Round of 16 in 2018 while ranked No. 70 in the world.
