Mexico Makes History with a Perfect Group Stage After Defeating Czechia at the 2026 World Cup
Mexico defeated Czechia 3-0 to complete, for the first time in its World Cup history, a perfect group stage. Goals from Mateo Chávez, Julián Quiñones, and Álvaro Fidalgo, along with Memo Ochoa's emotional appearance, capped an unforgettable night for El Tri.
Mexico Delivers a Historic Performance
The Mexico national team is no longer just another side through to the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. After defeating Czechia 3-0, Javier Aguirre's squad achieved something it had never accomplished in its 18 previous World Cup appearances: winning all three group-stage matches, keeping a perfect defensive record, and establishing itself as one of the tournament's most convincing teams.
Czechia controlled possession early and applied aggressive pressure that briefly unsettled El Tri. As the game progressed, however, Mexico gradually dictated the tempo and imposed the style of play that suited it best.
The reward arrived after halftime, when Mexico displayed a far more aggressive and clinical version of itself to turn a balanced contest into one of its most complete performances of the tournament.
Mateo Chávez Opened the Door and El Tri Never Looked Back
The turning point came in the 55th minute thanks to a brilliant play by Mateo Chávez. The young fullback collected a pass from Luis Romo, igniting celebrations among the more than 80,000 fans inside Estadio Ciudad de México.
Just six minutes later, Julián Quiñones once again showed why he has become such an important figure in Mexico's attack. The forward reacted quickest inside the penalty area to capitalize on a loose ball and score the 2-0, a devastating blow that effectively ended the European side's hopes of staying in the tournament.
With a comfortable lead, Javier Aguirre's team controlled possession, dictated the pace, and forced Czechia to spend long stretches chasing the ball during the remainder of the second half.
Fidalgo Put the Finishing Touches on a Special Night as Memo Ochoa Received an Emotional Tribute
Even with the result all but secured, one unforgettable moment still remained.
In the 78th minute, Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa entered the match to make his first appearance of his sixth FIFA World Cup. The standing ovation for the legendary goalkeeper became one of the tournament's most emotional scenes, as the stadium celebrated one of the greatest icons in Mexican football history.
Deep into stoppage time, Álvaro Fidalgo collected a rebound following an assist from Roberto Alvarado and calmly fired home the 3-0, putting the finishing touch on a performance defined by attacking efficiency, defensive organization, and complete confidence.

Mexico Heads into the Round of 32 Full of Confidence
Mexico enters the knockout stage with a clear identity, a defense that has yet to concede a goal, and a squad that continues to demonstrate remarkable depth across every position.
El Tri completed the group stage with nine points from nine, finished atop Group A, and became the first Mexican team ever to complete a World Cup group stage with both a perfect record and a clean sheet throughout.
After such an impressive opening round, Mexico enters the knockout stage not only as a qualified team, but as one of the tournament's strongest contenders and a side capable of challenging anyone on the road to the latter stages of the 2026 World Cup.
