Lionel Messi labelled Argentina's achievement of reaching back-to-back World Cup finals as "insane", after their late comeback win over England.

The Argentina captain assisted both Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez in a 2-1 victory on Wednesday, setting up a clash against European champions Spain in the showpiece.

Messi has either scored or assisted a goal in each of his last 13 appearances for club and country, the second-longest run of his senior career after a 14-game streak ending in March 2011.

Argentina, meanwhile, have reached consecutive World Cup finals for the second time, previously doing so in 1986 and 1990.

They have reached the World Cup final for the seventh time, the outright second most of any side after Germany (eight).

Messi revelled in their victory over England, which came despite trailing 1-0 as late as the 85th minute.

"This World Cup is incredible, and being in another final is amazing," Messi told TyC.

"To the Argentinians, I say the same thing I said in Qatar: enjoy it, this team will never let you down.

"Playing two World Cup finals in a row is insane, this group is incredible.

"Honestly, before the World Cup started, I trusted this group and knew we would be among the top four.

"We've been the best for the last four years, and we proved once again that nobody gave us anything and that everything we've achieved is on the pitch.

"Let it hurt whoever it hurts and let them say whatever they want, nobody gave this team anything for free."

Argentina were trailing until the 85th minute against England, the latest a team has been behind but gone on to win in normal time in a World Cup semi-final.

The 2026 final between Spain and Argentina will be the first-ever World Cup final between the reigning European champions and the reigning Copa America champions.
