Messi Equals an Incredible Record of "Zizinho"
The captain of the Argentine national team, Lionel Messi, has equaled the Brazilian "Zizinho" by scoring in six different editions of the Copa América.
The number ten matched the milestone by scoring in Albiceleste’s 2-0 victory over Canada in the tournament's first semifinal, which is being held in the United States.
Messi has reached 14 goals in all his participations in the competition, leaving him three short of the highest number scored by his compatriot Norberto Méndez and Thomaz Soares da Silva “Zizinho” himself, according to the website Besoccer.
Additionally, Messi, in his more than twenty-year career, has scored 108 goals for Argentina in 185 matches.
With yesterday's victory, Scaloni secured his third final: Copa América 2021, World Cup 2022, and the current one. The first two ended in titles for Albiceleste.
If Argentina manages to lift the Copa América after the final on Sunday, July 14, against either Uruguay or Colombia, they would match the feat only achieved by Spain of winning consecutive regional, world, and regional titles, as La Roja did in the Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, and Euro 2012.
Moreover, it would break the tie in the championship record between Argentina and Uruguay, with 15 wins each.
