CONMEBOL Rejects Flamengo’s Complaint and Confirms Estudiantes as Copa Libertadores Finalist
CONMEBOL Dismissed Flamengo’s Complaint About Marcos Rojo’s Improper Alignment “Entirely.”
CONMEBOL fully rejected on Wednesday the complaint from Brazil's Flamengo over the alleged ineligible lineup of defender Marcos Rojo in the semifinal match of the Copa Libertadores against Estudiantes de La Plata, a decision that confirmed the Argentine side as finalist of South American football's top club tournament.
The governing body notified in a statement its rejection of the injunction requests filed by Flamengo, which was eliminated last week in the penalty shootout at the iconic Maracaná stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
The Mengao argued at the time that Rojo's lineup, a recent signing for the La Plata side, was irregular, since Conmebol had initially rejected his registration for the tournament before the first leg of the semifinals
The appeal to CAS
But the Argentine team appealed the resolution before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and requested an injunction for his lineup in last Thursday's second leg.
Had the complaint succeeded, Flamengo, which according to the Brazilian press had asked its players to delay their vacations while awaiting Conmebol's resolution, would have advanced to the final.
Rojo signs for Estudiantes and the final is confirmed
Rojo, 36, signed in recent days for Estudiantes after terminating his contract with Racing Club.
With their victory over Flamengo, Estudiantes qualified for the final of the continental tournament, where they will face Brazil's Palmeiras on November 28 at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo. EFE
