Fluminense will defend its title in the Copa Libertadores against Paraguayan Cerro Porteño, Peru's Alianza Lima, and Chile's Colo Colo, as determined in the group stage draw held on Monday in the Paraguayan city of Luque.
Flu, who defeated Boca Juniors at Maracanã, leads Group A.
This edition will award the champion with $23 million, making the Libertadores final "the best-paid match in the world," announced the president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), Alejandro Domínguez, during a ceremony that brought together football stars and South American leaders.
The draw placed the five-time champion of this tournament, Uruguay's Peñarol, at the helm of Group G, while Argentina's River Plate, with four titles in its record, will lead Group H.
The three-time champions Sao Paulo, Flamengo, and Palmeiras lead Groups B, E, and F, respectively.
The current Copa Sudamericana champion, L.D.U de Quito, will face Colombian Junior, Universitario from Peru, and Botafogo from Brazil in the Libertadores as the head of Group D.
The draw began with tributes to the recently deceased Osvaldo Domínguez Dibb, father of the CONMEBOL president and one of Paraguayan football's most successful leaders at Olimpia, and former Uruguayan footballer Enzo Francescoli.
