Coventry City opened up a nine-point gap at the Championship summit with a 3-0 victory over Swansea City.

Hours after second-placed Middlesbrough dropped points against Blackburn Rovers, first-half goals from Brandon Thomas-Asante, Matt Grimes and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto secured a comfortable victory for Frank Lampard's men in Wales.

Swansea almost took the lead through Josh Tymon, who saw his first-time effort crash against the crossbar, while Ellis Simms shot straight at Lawrence Vigouroux from close range at the other end.

The visitors then made their breakthrough just after the half-hour mark when Ben Cabango fouled Ephron Mason-Clark in the box, and Thomas-Asante coolly dispatched his spot-kick.

That goal opened the floodgates for Coventry, who scored twice more in the following 11 minutes. Grimes brilliantly volleyed home from distance against his former side, before Sakamoto's deflected effort beat Vigouroux at his near post.

It was a quieter second half, but there were still chances at either end. First, Simms shot at the goalkeeper again, before Zan Vipotnik sliced wide for the hosts in the closing stages.

After a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture this season, Coventry have completed the league double over Swansea for the first time since 1946-47, also in the second tier.

It was a deserved victory for Lampard's side, who produced 2.26 expected goals (xG) from 14 shots to Swansea's 1.72 from 12 attempts.

While Mason-Clark did not register any direct goal contributions, he was very influential for Coventry.

The winger was fouled for the penalty, created the joint-most chances for his side (two), completed the most dribbles (four of six), won the most duels (10 of 13), and drew the most fouls (four).
