Title Holders Senegal Edge Uganda to Reach CHAN Semi-Finals
With a decisive strike from Oumar Ba, defending champions Senegal defeated Uganda 1-0 in Kampala to book their place in the CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 semi-finals.
Champions Show Their Pedigree in Kampala
Defending champions Senegal took another step in their title defense with a narrow 1-0 victory over Uganda in a tense quarterfinal at the Mandela National Stadium. The breakthrough came in the 62nd minute when Libasse Guèye surged down the right wing and sent in a dangerous cross. Oumar Ba ghosted in at the far post and slotted home with his right foot, silencing over 35,000 home fans.
It was a goal that highlighted Senegal’s experience and composure — patient, clinical, and perfectly timed in a match of few clear opportunities.
Uganda Fights but Falls Short
The Cranes, who had already made history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time, threw everything at their opponents. Allan Okello tested goalkeeper Marc Diouf with a powerful drive before halftime, while substitutes Ivan Ahimbisibwe and Arnold Odong both came close in the second half.
The best chance came in the 68th minute when Gavin Kizito connected with an Okello corner, but his header drifted just wide. Despite creating more shots overall, Uganda lacked the finishing edge that Senegal displayed in the decisive moment.
Senegal’s Defensive Strength Stands Tall
With the tournament’s best defensive record, Senegal once again held firm. Seyni Ndiaye and Joseph Layousse commanded the backline, while Diouf was solid whenever called into action. Head coach Souleymane Diallo made effective changes, introducing Moctar Koïté, Vieux Cissé, and Mbaye Ndiaye to refresh the squad and relieve late pressure.
For Uganda, the loss was painful, but the campaign remains historic. They topped a group ahead of Algeria and South Africa, and standout performances from Okello and Ssemugabi gave fans reason to believe this generation can achieve even more. The players were applauded off the field, recognition for a run that restored pride despite the quarterfinal exit.
With this victory, Senegal advances to its second consecutive CHAN semi-final, where they will face Madagascar. Meanwhile, Uganda head coach Morley Byekwaso insisted post-match that his side “will learn from this and come back stronger.”
