Germany’s top soccer division will begin its new season on Friday, August 28, 2026, with Bayern Munich hosting VfB Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena. The opening game is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. CEST. Matchday 1 will run from Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30, with all 18 Bundesliga clubs beginning their league campaigns over the course of the weekend.
When does the 2026-27 Bundesliga start?
Germany’s top soccer division already has its schedule confirmed. The new season will begin in late August, one week later than the previous campaign because of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Bayern opens the season as defending champion

As the 2025-26 Bundesliga champion, Bayern Munich will have the honor of playing the first match of the new campaign at home. Its opponent will be VfB Stuttgart in one of the most notable fixtures of the opening weekend.
The rest of Matchday 1 will continue on Saturday, August 29. Confirmed games include RB Leipzig against Borussia Mönchengladbach, 1. FC Union Berlin versus Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund hosting Hamburger SV. The round will conclude on Sunday, August 30, with SC Freiburg facing SV Werder Bremen and FC Augsburg taking on FC Schalke 04, among the final fixtures.
The official calendar also establishes that the Bundesliga season will run through May 22, 2027, when Matchday 34 is scheduled to be played. The league will keep its traditional 18-team, 34-matchday format, with every club facing each opponent once at home and once away.
Why does the 2026-27 Bundesliga start later?

The start of the Bundesliga was pushed back by one week compared with the previous season because of the 2026 international calendar. The FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico ended on July 19, forcing German soccer authorities to adjust the domestic schedule and provide a suitable break between the national-team tournament and the beginning of club competition.
Other official competitions in Germany begin before the Bundesliga opener. Bundesliga 2 started on August 7, while the first round of the DFB-Pokal was scheduled for August 21-24. The Franz Beckenbauer Supercup was also scheduled for August 22.
The winter break and the end of the season
The DFL has already confirmed the exact dates and kick-off times for the opening four Bundesliga matchdays. The detailed scheduling of later rounds will be announced during the season, taking into account factors such as clubs’ participation in European competitions and the DFB-Pokal.
The Bundesliga will enter its winter break after Matchday 14, scheduled for the weekend of December 18-20, 2026. League play will resume on January 8, 2027. Therefore, Friday, August 28 will officially mark the start of another race for the German championship.
