Schalke 0-0 Bayern Munich: Kompany gamble backfires as Kane and co. frustrated

Vincent Kompany's decision to start Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Jamal Musiala on the bench backfired as Bayern Munich played out a toothless 0-0 draw at Schalke on Saturday.

The trio all entered the fray for the second half, when Bayern improved after a drab opening period in which Nathaniel Brown and Luis Diaz missed Die Roten's best openings at Veltins-Arena.

Diaz was guilty of missing another good chance after the break, and Kane was sensationally denied by Loris Karius late on, as Schalke earned a deserved first point since returning to the Bundesliga after three seasons in the second tier.

Nathaniel Brown shot straight at Karius after being wonderfully slipped in by Aleksandar Pavlovic in the 13th minute.

Schalke had a couple of tame penalty shouts waved away, the first for handball against Dayot Upamecano and then for Alphonso Davies outmuscling Junior Dina Ebimbe, before Adil Aouchiche's bending free-kick was saved by ex-Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Diaz had the best chance of the opening period four minutes before the break, fluffing his lines one-on-one after a wonderful slip throughball from Brown.

Shortly after the restart, Diaz was slipped in again by Davies, but he did not get enough purchase on the chip, which hit the hand of Karius and was belted away by Hasan Kurucay.

Olise forced a save from the feet of Karius shortly after entering the action, while Konrad Laimer sliced into the side netting when one-on-one with Karius.

Kane thought he had stolen it for Bayern with a crunching 25-yard strike that looked destined for the top-left corner, only for Karius to fling out his right hand and brilliantly tip it behind.

Bayern leave it too late to find their bite

Bayern had scored nine goals across their first two competitive games this season, the 5-1 Bundesliga win over Stuttgart and 4-1 triumph at Osnabruck in the DFB-Pokal.

But with Kane, Olise, and Musiala benched here, they were toothless in an opening period that produced just two shots on target and an expected goals (xG) of 0.62 – albeit that was still better than Schalke's 0.13.

Kane, just two goals shy of 100 Bundesliga goals, was brought on immediately at the break, while Olise and Musiala soon entered the fray, and Bayern were far more proactive in their attacking play.

Indeed, by the end of the game their shots on target had improved to five and their xG to 2.1, but Bayern continued to be frustrated.

Schalke did ride their luck on a couple of occasions, but by and large it was a defensive masterclass from Miron Muslic's side in front of a boisterous home support, while Karius' stop at the end was right out of the top drawer.

Bayern are now unbeaten in 26 straight meetings against Schalke, but a run of seven consecutive wins against them is now at an end.
