Olise, Kane and Luis Díaz: Bayern’s New Attacking Trio Chasing Football’s Greatest Records
The attacking trio of Bayern Munich has already been involved in 128 goals this season and is beginning to rival legendary attacks like Barcelona’s “MSN” and record-breaking Real Madrid sides.
For years in Bavaria, many believed they would never see another attacking trio as dominant as Arjen Robben, Robert Lewandowski and Franck Ribéry. Yet the current combination of Michael Olise, Harry Kane and Luis Díaz has brought the attacking machine of Bayern Munich back to life. Together, the trio has already been involved in 128 goals across all competitions this season, numbers that are starting to put them in the same conversation as some of the most prolific tridents in football history, including the famous FC Barcelona trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar, as well as the record-breaking Real Madrid side coached by José Mourinho.
The first piece of the puzzle was Harry Kane, who arrived determined to end his long wait for major trophies. The English striker recently celebrated the 500th goal of his career and has already scored 130 goals in 133 matches for Bayern. Kane currently leads the race for the European Golden Boot with 30 Bundesliga goals, and 45 in all competitions, putting him on pace to challenge Lewandowski’s record 41-goal Bundesliga season in 2020–21.
A year later, Michael Olise joined from Crystal Palace. The talented winger quickly adapted, finishing his first season as the top assist provider in the Bundesliga with 15 assists. This season he already has 18 assists (26 in all competitions) along with 15 goals.
“His mentality can make him one of the best players in the world,” said Bayern coach Vincent Kompany.
The final addition to the trio was Luis Díaz, who arrived from Liverpool in a €70 million transfer. Despite early criticism, the Colombian has delivered outstanding numbers with 20 goals and 17 assists, the best season of his career.
Sporting director Max Eberl defended the signing: “We were criticized at first, but we knew exactly what we were doing.” Together, the trio has contributed to 128 of Bayern’s 134 goals this season. In the Bundesliga alone they have produced 92 goals after 25 matches, averaging nearly four per game.
If they maintain this pace, Bayern could surpass their historic 101-goal Bundesliga record from the 1971–72 season, and even challenge the scoring record set by Real Madrid in the 2011–12 La Liga campaign. They have already surpassed the peak numbers of the Robben–Lewandowski–Ribéry trio, which reached 104 goals in the 2016–17 season.
With Bayern in the semifinals of the DFB-Pokal, leading the Bundesliga and close to reaching the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League, the trio still has many games left.
If Bayern plays every possible match until the end of the season, projections suggest they could surpass 184 goal contributions, potentially placing this Bayern attack among the most devastating in football history.
