Dortmund confirmed the diagnosis on Sunday after the 23-year-old Greece international underwent further examinations. The club did not provide an exact timetable for his return, but the Bundesliga indicated that the injury will likely force him to miss a significant portion of the 2026-27 season.

The news is even more painful because of the way it happened. Konstantelias was enjoying an almost perfect Bundesliga debut against Hamburger SV: he scored his first goal in a BVB shirt and was producing an impressive performance before everything changed just a few minutes later.

Konstantelias started Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 victory over Hamburger SV at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK and was rewarded for his performance just before halftime.

In the 45+1 minute, Maximilian Beier advanced down the left and found the Greek midfielder, whose shot ended up in the back of the net after taking a deflection off Sebastiaan Bornauw. It made it 2-0 and also marked Konstantelias’ first goal as a Dortmund player.

But the celebration did not last long.

In the 52nd minute, the Greek midfielder went down following an incident in the middle of the pitch and was forced to leave the match. The initial reaction immediately raised concerns within the club, and subsequent examinations confirmed the worst-case scenario: a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

As a result, a debut that appeared destined to become one of the biggest stories of the opening matchday instead turned into one of the most significant blows Dortmund could have suffered.

Dortmund Lose One of Their New Talents

The injury represents a major problem for Niko Kovač, especially because Konstantelias needed very little time to demonstrate what he could bring to the team.

The midfielder arrived this summer from PAOK and had already made a positive impression after coming off the bench against Bayern Munich in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. Against Hamburg, he received his first major opportunity and immediately responded with a goal.

His technical quality, movement between the lines and ability to create danger had increased expectations surrounding his arrival. Alongside fellow Greek Konstantinos Karetsas, he also represented an important injection of creativity into Dortmund’s attack.

Dortmund sporting CEO Lars Ricken acknowledged that the news represents a major blow for the club and made it clear that the priority now is to fully support the player throughout his recovery.

Will the Injury Force Dortmund Back Into the Transfer Market?

That is now one of the biggest questions facing Dortmund.

The club appeared to have virtually completed its squad planning, but losing a player expected to have an important role for several months could completely change those plans during the final hours of the transfer window.

For now, Dortmund have not officially announced that they will sign a replacement. However, Konstantelias’ absence reduces Kovač’s attacking options just as a season begins in which the club will compete in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and UEFA Champions League.

The schedule will not provide much time to absorb the setback either. Dortmund will have to make at least one change for their next cup match after opening their Bundesliga campaign with a 2-0 victory over Hamburger SV.

The season was only just beginning, and Giannis Konstantelias appeared ready to quickly establish himself as one of Borussia Dortmund’s new protagonists.

He scored on his debut, celebrated in front of his new supporters and began showing exactly why the club had invested in him.

But just a few minutes later, everything changed.

Soccer will now have to wait. Konstantelias faces a long recovery, while Borussia Dortmund must find a way to cope with an absence that could extend through a significant portion of the season.
