Who Is Gilberto Mora’s Father, the New Mexican Star Followed by Barcelona and Real Madrid?
Gilberto Mora Jr. shines with the Mexican national team and draws attention from European giants, but his story began with a father who coached and debuted him as a child.
The Mora Dynasty: The Father Who Launched Mexico’s New Football Gem
The meteoric rise of Gilberto Mora is no coincidence. Behind the new sensation of Mexican football stands his father, Gilberto Mora Olayo, a former professional player and current youth coach at Club Tijuana. He not only passed on his love for the game, he was the one who gave his son his first official debut in the youth divisions.
Mora Sr. played a key role in Tijuana’s historic promotion to Liga MX, leaving his mark on clubs such as Toluca, Puebla, and Jaguares de Chiapas. His career as a left-footed midfielder began in 1996, and after years of dedication, he retired in 2011, right after achieving the dream of promotion with the Xolos.
That moment marked the start of a new family story. In the stands of Estadio Caliente, a tiny “Gil Morita,” barely two years old, was already following in his father’s footsteps, wearing his first football shoes, unaware that one day, he’d be the one shining under those same lights.
The Player Who Made History and Passed on His Competitive Spirit
One of the most memorable moments of Mora Sr.’s career came during the Clausura 2003 season, when his stunning goal saved Jaguares de Chiapas from relegation. That left-foot strike into the top corner changed the club’s fate and remains a legendary moment for fans.
Years later, during the Apertura 2010 final, he was a key piece in Tijuana’s title win, providing the assist for Javier Gandolfi’s opening goal against Veracruz. That victory paved the way for promotion to Mexico’s top flight. During the celebrations, Mora Sr. lifted the trophy with his young son in his arms a symbolic image of the birth of a new generation of football talent.
The Father Who Gave His Son His First Shot
After hanging up his boots, Mora Olayo began his coaching career, first as an assistant at Chiapas, then in Tijuana’s youth system. In 2019, he had the privilege of giving his own son his debut with the Xolos’ U-13 team during the Primavera tournament.
From that first match, in which Gil Jr. scored against Querétaro, the young forward showed he was something special. Before turning 16, he had already scored 39 goals at the youth level. His progress was so remarkable that he made his Liga MX debut at just 15 years and 320 days, soon becoming the youngest player ever to score in the league.
Pride, Discipline, and a European Future
Today, Gilberto Mora Jr. is one of Mexico’s brightest young prospects. His name has reached the scouting departments of Barcelona and Real Madrid, who are closely tracking his development. Meanwhile, his father continues to guide him, reminding him that humility and discipline are just as important as talent.
“A player can’t make it alone; he needs his family and his values,” Mora Olayo has said in interview with TUDN Radio. That philosophy has kept the young “Gil Morita” grounded, even as his career heads toward stardom.
The story of the Moras is not just about a father and a son, it’s the story of a Mexican football dynasty poised to make history.
