USMNT Legend Slams Pulisic: “He’s Not the Captain We Need”
Former U.S. defender Alexi Lalas questioned Christian Pulisic’s leadership with the USMNT, while Marcel Desailly defended the AC Milan star, highlighting his growth and maturity in Europe.
Alexi Lalas Questions the AC Milan Star’s Leadership
Former U.S. international and analyst Alexi Lalas stirred controversy by claiming that Christian Pulisic is “not the captain the USMNT wants or needs,” ahead of the 2026 World Cup. For the former defender, while Pulisic may be the most recognizable face in American soccer, leadership requires far more than talent or fame.
Speaking on the State of the Union podcast, Lalas was blunt in his assessment that the U.S. national team lacks a strong voice within the locker room:
“I don’t think Christian Pulisic is the captain this team needs or wants. The problem is: who else is there? There’s no one ready to step into that role. Not Chris Richards, not Weston McKennie, not even Tyler Adams, who seemed destined for it but never quite grew into that position.”
The former World Cup defender added that being the team’s best player doesn’t automatically make someone a natural leader.
“Your best player doesn’t always have to be the captain. We’ve seen that many times. It’s not just about passion or experience — sometimes you have to think about what’s best for the team.”
According to Lalas, the squad lacks a combative mentality and doesn’t have anyone who embodies the “Bad Boys” spirit of the old Detroit Pistons, known for their toughness and edge on the court.
Desailly Defends Pulisic and Praises His Maturity in Italy
Not everyone agrees with Lalas. World Cup champion and Chelsea legend Marcel Desailly came to Pulisic’s defense, saying the American has matured significantly during his time with AC Milan.
“I’m happy to see him at Milan. Last season, he had some good moments, even though injuries hurt his consistency. He has incredible talent and is growing into a leader within the team,” Desailly told GOAL in collaboration with OLBG.
The French icon added that Pulisic is showing greater responsibility and confidence on and off the pitch:
“He’s been playing more on the right wing. He’s not really a natural goal scorer, but he already has four goals in six games. What’s important is that he’s taking on more responsibility and could become the leader AC Milan needs.”
“Captain America” Takes It All in Stride
When recently asked by DAZN about the possibility of captaining AC Milan, Pulisic responded with a smile:
“It’s a cool nickname. Captain of Milan? For now, ‘Captain America’ is fine. We’ll see what happens.”
As the USMNT looks to establish a true leader ahead of its home World Cup, the debate surrounding Pulisic’s character and leadership continues — between those who criticize him and those who see him as the future face of American soccer.
