Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Announces His Retirement From the Gabon National Team
One of the most important careers in the history of Gabon soccer has come to an end. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang announced that he will no longer represent the Panthers, bringing the curtain down on an international career that lasted more than 15 years.
Aubameyang represented Gabon from 2009, appeared in several editions of the Africa Cup of Nations and wore the captain’s armband for many years. His final major continental tournament was the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, held in Morocco.
Gabon’s All-Time Leading Goalscorer
Talking about Aubameyang’s international career inevitably means talking about goals.
The striker ends his journey as the Panthers’ all-time leading scorer with 40 goals, a status he built over more than a decade as his country’s main attacking reference.
His relationship with the national team began in 2009, and one of the moments that established him as a national star came during the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. Gabon co-hosted that edition alongside Equatorial Guinea, with Aubameyang playing a major role in a team that reached the quarterfinals.
From that point forward, he became the face of the national team.
Unlike other great African strikers who were surrounded by deeper generations of talent, Aubameyang spent much of his career carrying the responsibility for both the goals and the expectations of a country looking to establish itself among the continent’s leading national teams.
An International Career That Even Included a Comeback
His story with Gabon appeared to have ended once before.
In May 2022, Aubameyang announced his first international retirement after 13 years with the national team. However, just one year later, he decided to return and make himself available to the Panthers once again.
That second chapter allowed him to extend his goalscoring record and pursue one of the few objectives he was never able to accomplish: playing at a FIFA World Cup.
Gabon came close to keeping that dream alive on the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but ultimately failed to qualify. Aubameyang will therefore finish his career without appearing at a World Cup, one of the few stages missing from an international journey filled with goals.
His Final Goal at the Africa Cup of Nations
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations ultimately became Aubameyang’s final major stage with his country.
Gabon were eliminated during the group stage, but the striker still managed to leave one final goalscoring memory with the Panthers.
Against Mozambique, Aubameyang scored in first-half stoppage time during Gabon’s 3-2 defeat. The striker reacted to a rebound inside the penalty area to find the net once again in Africa’s biggest national-team competition. The CAF also highlighted that the goal placed him among the oldest goalscorers in the history of the tournament.
It was a moment that perfectly summed up much of his international career: even on a difficult night for Gabon, Aubameyang still found a way to score.
The End of a Generation for the Panthers
His retirement leaves a void that goes far beyond simply finding another center forward.
For years, Aubameyang was Gabon’s captain, leading goalscorer and biggest international star. His speed, ability to attack space and finishing made him the player around whom much of the Panthers’ attack was built.
Now an inevitable transition begins.
The national team will have to find new attacking leaders and, above all, someone capable of replacing the goalscoring production that carried the same name for so many years.
Aubameyang, meanwhile, will be able to focus on the final stage of his career at club level. He currently plays for Deportivo La Coruña, where he has started the season with three goals in his first three matches.
His story with Gabon, however, has already been written.
