Luis Suárez Retirement Speculations Refuted
Gremio Vice President Paulo Caleffi denies the circulated reports of Uruguayan international Luis Suárez's possible retirement from active football due to his long-standing arthritis condition.
"What I can assure the fans is that the news of Luis Suárez approaching Gremio's management to announce his retirement never existed. That's simply it," stated Caleffi in a press conference after the 3-1 victory over América.
According to the official, "the fact is quite clear: Gremio has a valid contract with Suárez, and no one can speak about what will happen in the future. Nobody knows about tomorrow." He emphasized that the information is "blatantly mistaken."
Suárez started and scored one of the goals in Thursday's home victory amid rumors about his potential retirement from football due to issues with his right knee.
The 36-year-old forward played 82 minutes and sealed Gremio's win. The team currently sits third in the Brazilian Championship with 20 points, seven points behind the leaders Botafogo, who secured a 1-0 victory over Cuiabá.
During a fan event on Wednesday, Gremio President Alberto Guerra had described Suárez's "serious" health problems and mentioned the possibility of a prosthesis as the player currently requires injections to alleviate the pain.
