Inter Miami exited the Champions Cup after a 1-1 draw with Nashville SC, despite Lionel Messi netting his 900th career goal.

Messi, who did not play for Miami in their last MLS outing, opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a trademark, low left-footed finish swept beyond Nashville goalkeeper Brian Schwake.

However, Cristian Espinoza's 74th-minute volley dragged Nashville onto level terms.

And with Miami, despite registering 54 final-third entries to Nashville's 38, unable to restore their lead, it meant the reigning MLS Cup champions slipped out on away goals, following a 0-0 draw in the first leg.

Liga MX giants Club America are next up for Nashville in the quarter-finals, after a 1-1 draw with the Philadelphia Union secured a 2-1 aggregate win.

Late goals from Daniel Musovski and Paul Rothrock led the Seattle Sounders to a 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps, sealing a 5-1 triumph on aggregate.

Toluca, meanwhile, completed a comeback in style. After losing the first leg of their tie with San Diego FC 3-2, the Mexican side hammered their MLS opponents 4-0.

Messi had to wait over 10 days to move from 899 career goals on to 900, but he wasted little time in getting to the landmark during this match.

He is only the second active player, along with Cristiano Ronaldo, to score 900 times.

The 38-year-old has netted 16 times in 12 meetings against Nashville, while this was his 81st goal for Miami.

It came from his sole shot on target, though Messi led the way for chances created (three) and passes in the final third (24).
