Germany great Popp to join Dortmund
Germany stalwart Alexandra Popp will join Borussia Dortmund ahead of next season, the club confirmed on Saturday.
Borussia Dortmund have announced Alexandra Popp will join the club as a free agent this summer, ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Former Germany captain Popp will join the third-tier side in the Regionalliga West on a three-year deal at the end of the ongoing season, bringing an end to her successful 14-year spell at Wolfsburg.
She has made 332 appearances in the Frauen-Bundesliga, scoring 158 goals and winning seven league titles, along with two UEFA Champions League trophies with Wolfsburg and one with FCR 2001 Duisburg.
Despite retiring from international football in 2024, Popp remains one of just five players to reach double figures in the German top-flight this season.
The three-time Germany Women's Footballer of the Year was unveiled to fans at Signal Iduna Park ahead of Dortmund's 2-0 Bundesliga victory over Augsburg on Saturday.
"My heart beats for this club," Popp said in an interview with Dortmund's media channels.
"I'm slowly approaching the end of my career and need to listen to my body. I didn't want to miss the opportunity to play in a BVB shirt.
"It's very exciting for me to be able to help shape the club's future, building on the success it has enjoyed so far."
BVB managing director Svenja Schlenker emphasised the importance of Popp's signing, adding: "Signing Alex is a major statement of our ambitions.
"The fact that a player of her calibre has consciously chosen BVB makes us incredibly proud and sends a strong signal about the importance and future of women's football at Dortmund."
