Dani Alves Acquires a Third Division Team in Portugal
Brazilian former FC Barcelona full-back, Dani Alves, has become one of the owners of a Portuguese club, Sporting São João de Ver, which currently plays in the Iberian country's third division.
Official announcement
“In a moment that will remain etched in the club's memory, we have officially announced the signing of Daniel Alves as co-owner of SC São João de Ver.” The Portuguese third division club confirmed.
Alves' arrival at São João de Ver was made official by the club in a statement shared on their Facebook social media account, in which they highlighted that the former Barça player brings "global vision, a winning mentality, and ambition".
The new addition to the Portuguese club's management has played an incredible 1,035 games as a professional player and scored 75 goals throughout his long career. Now he will try his luck on the board of directors.
Prior sentence to the acquisition of the club
The 42-year-old footballer became a shareholder in the club based in the Portuguese town of Santa Maria da Feira after being convicted in February 2024 and then acquitted last March by the High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) for the crime of raping a young woman in Barcelona.
The former Brazilian international spent fourteen months in preventive detention and was sentenced to four and a half years in prison, but the TSJC overturned the conviction because there was no evidence of the assault and the suer's testimony was not “reliable,” in addition to the fact that the initial conviction contained certain “inaccuracies.”
Sao Joao Ver's current situation
The club acquired by Dani Alves is currently in Portugal's Liga 3. They have never made it to the first division and are now fighting relegation in Group A, where Dani Alves' new team is second to last out of ten competitors.
São João de Ver has played 14 games to date, losing 7, drawing 5, and winning only 2 so far this season.
