Stina Blackstenius netted in second-half stoppage time as Arsenal saw off Everton 1-0 to move into second place in the Women's Super League.

Beth Mead's final home appearance for Arsenal saw her hit the woodwork twice before she went off to an ovation at Emirates Stadium.

It was confirmed earlier this week that Mead, who has created more chances (390) and provided more assists (54) in the WSL than any other player in the competition's history, is leaving Arsenal at the end of the season.

And though she could not bow out at home with a goal, the Gunners nevertheless got the win they needed to leapfrog Chelsea heading into the final game of the campaign.

Mead came closest for Arsenal before a contentious winner arrived in the 93rd minute, courtesy of substitute Blackstenius.

Leah Williamson seemed to foul Everton goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan, but the officials did not spot the infringement, and Blackstenius was on hand to finish.

Arsenal round off their season with a trip to Liverpool, and know a win would guarantee their place in second, behind champions Manchester City.

Blackstenius has now played a part in eight WSL goals after coming off the bench this season (six goals, two assists).

She netted with her only attempt, having just five touches overall.

Mead, meanwhile, had four attempts but did not hit the target with any of them. Still, the rapturous applause she received when she left the field in the 64th minute was a fitting end to her Emirates adventure.

Arsenal lost their first WSL meeting with Everton back in July 2011, but are unbeaten in all 24 since then, winning 21 times (D3) – that is now the most wins one side has recorded over another in the competition.
