Fidalgo’s FIFA One Time Switch brings him closer to El Tri
After several months of administrative procedures, Álvaro Fidalgo is now closer than ever to wearing the jersey of the Mexico National Team. The midfielder completed his FIFA One Time Switch, a process that can only be done once in a player’s career and, once approved, permanently prevents him from representing Spain.
With this step finalized, the player known as “Maguito” is now officially eligible to play for El Tri, closing the door on any possibility of representing the Spanish national team in the future.
A new hope for the Mexico National Team
The news arrives at an important moment in Javier Aguirre’s project leading up to the 2026 World Cup. On March 10, the Mexican National Teams Directorate confirmed that Fidalgo has been included in the Mexico National Team preliminary roster for the March FIFA international window, marking his first formal step toward joining the squad.
European quality in Mexico’s midfield
The midfielder’s strong form has been key in attracting the attention of the coaching staff. His ability to control the tempo of the game, his vision in midfield, and his recent offensive contributions have made him an interesting option to strengthen the team.
By being included in the preliminary roster, his club has already been notified about the potential release of the player for this month’s international fixtures.

A dream stage: Estadio Azteca
Mexico vs Portugal will take place on March 28 at Estadio Azteca, a match that will also mark the official reopening of the iconic stadium after its renovation ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Afterward, El Tri will travel to Chicago to face Belgium on March 31, in another high-level international friendly.
