VIDEO | Ligue 1 Highlights: Rennes vs Marseille
Stade Rennes emerged from their slump and brought Marseille back to the reality of the current season with a 2-0 victory. Marseille, recently qualified for the Europa League semi-finals and with Jean Louis Gasset taking over the reins, had previously enjoyed three consecutive victories.
The Marseille team was on the brink of elimination from the Europa League against Villarreal. They lost 3-1 at La Cerámica but advanced thanks to the comfortable lead from the first leg (4-0).
However, twenty minutes into the match, Julien Stephan's team took the lead with a goal from Martin Terrier assisted by Amine Gouiri. Marseille had a chance to equalize in the 73rd minute with a free-kick from Gabonese player Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, which hit the post.
Five minutes later, in the 78th minute, a foul inside the box by Ivorian Abdoul Bamo Meite was penalized with a penalty. Benjamin Bourigeaud converted it, sealing the match.
Marseille now finds themselves outside the European spots, sitting in seventh place, three points behind Lens, who currently occupy the continental positions that Stade Rennes, in eighth place, are also vying for.
