Simeone is asked about Rodri’s Ballon d'Or and says this
Diego Simeone, Atlético Madrid’s manager, expressed his happiness on Wednesday about the Ballon d'Or win of Manchester City midfielder Rodrigo Hernández, whom he coached for one season with Atlético in 2018-19, and of whom he said, “he deserves it” and “is an incredible player.”
“He was with us for one season, but he left a very good mark. We fought hard to keep him, and he made a very good choice to go to City, because as a result, he has achieved many great things, improved his game even more, and grown as a player. That year he was with us, he gave us a lot, so I’m very happy for him—it’s very well-deserved,” the Argentine coach commented in the press conference held in Majadahonda.
“And, especially for those of us who played midfield at one point, it’s good to recognize that work that often goes unnoticed, but is a big part of what a team can produce,” continued Simeone, who declined to comment on Real Madrid's decision not to attend the gala after Vinicius was not awarded: “I’m very respectful of others’ decisions and actions. In this case, everyone knows how they conduct themselves and why.”
No Atlético players were nominated in any category. “Certainly, this past season that didn’t happen, and other coaches, young players, breakthrough talents, goalkeepers, and Ballon d'Or nominees were much better,” he said.
