Peñarol fans commit vandalistic acts in Rio de Janeiro
Dozens of Peñarol fans committed a series of vandalistic acts on a beach in Rio de Janeiro hours before the first leg of the Copa Libertadores semifinals against Botafogo, official sources reported.
The incidents occurred around noon at the Recreio dos Bandeirantes beach in the west of the Brazilian city, where there were looting of businesses, destruction of kiosks, a bus was set on fire, and several police officers were attacked.
Approximately 200 people were detained during the altercations, according to the Brazilian news portal g1.
The Military Police stated that the incidents began after one of the ultras was caught stealing a mobile phone from inside a store on the beach.
Videos shared on social media show moments when fans of the Uruguayan team, some with their faces covered, destroyed chairs and furniture from the kiosks and attacked some of the beachgoers with sticks and bottles.
Unable to contain the violent Uruguayan fans, the police called for the Shock Battalion to reinforce security, which managed to halt the violent acts and subdue the vandals.
Botafogo and Peñarol will face each other on Wednesday at the Nilton Santos Stadium in Rio de Janeiro for the first leg of the Libertadores semifinals.
The winner of this series will meet the best from the clash between Atlético Mineiro and River Plate in the final.
