Messi and Argentina National Team Escape Hurricane Milton and Head to Venezuela
Lionel Messi's Argentina National Team departed from Miami, USA, on Wednesday, heading to Venezuela with a stopover in Colombia, for tomorrow’s South American World Cup Qualifier.
There was much uncertainty surrounding the Albiceleste's trip, as they were based in Florida, where the powerful Hurricane Milton—a historic and devastating storm—is expected to hit in the coming hours.
The team, however, managed to begin their flight to Barranquilla, Colombia, a stop on their way to Maturín, the location of tomorrow's match. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed this through their social media, sharing photos of the players on the plane.
Milton's proximity put the travel plans of Lionel Scaloni’s squad at risk, including Lionel Messi, which could have forced the postponement of the match against Venezuela.
What Lionel Scaloni Said About Hurricane Milton
"We requested to travel today, but we were denied due to the hurricane, so the trip would be on Wednesday," said the World Cup-winning coach to reporters during a press conference.
"It would be almost impossible to leave on Thursday," Scaloni explained, considering the possibility that the delegation might not even be able to depart on Wednesday.
"It’s not in our control. The most important thing is people’s safety. You can’t isolate yourself from what’s happening outside; for everyone’s well-being, they are being protected by leaving their homes. It’s something new, different for us, something we’re not used to. We’re on alert. Hopefully, it will be just a passing issue," he added.
