Guardiola and Manchester City Defeat Manchester United to Clinch Another Community Shield
Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City team broke a streak of three consecutive Community Shield losses by defeating Manchester United in a penalty shootout on Saturday.
The Spanish coach, who had won only two of the last seven Supercups he contested, saw his City side equalize Alejandro Garnacho's early goal in the dying moments. In the subsequent penalty shootout, despite an initial miss by Bernardo Silva, City triumphed after 16 spot-kicks, securing Guardiola's third English Supercup.
Without key players like Rodrigo, Phil Foden, or Kevin De Bruyne in the starting lineup (with the Belgian playing only a few minutes), Guardiola fielded a team with many young players, who performed admirably for much of the match.
Alejandro Garnacho was the target of long passes from Bruno Fernandes, who had a spectacular goal disallowed for offside. In their first successful connection, Garnacho set up Marcus Rashford perfectly, but the striker shockingly hit the post with his left foot despite having everything in his favor.
However, a dribble and cross from Bobb found Bernardo Silva, whose header sent the match to penalties.
In the shootout, both teams were flawless until Johnny Evans sent the ball over the crossbar with the 15th attempt. Manuel Akanji made no mistake with the next kick, and City, after three consecutive disappointments in this competition against Leicester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal, finally claimed the Community Shield.
