Gabriel Milito Highlights Key Strategy for Atlético Mineiro in Libertadores Final
Atlético Mineiro coach Gabriel Milito outlined his team’s approach to the Copa Libertadores Final against Botafogo during a press conference held at the Estadio Monumental on Friday. Milito emphasized that relentless pressure from the start and maintaining clarity in attack will be crucial to their success.
Offensive and Defensive Balance
Milito acknowledged Botafogo's speed and their effectiveness when they counterattack towards the opposing goal. He stressed the importance of completing as many offensive plays as possible.
"We must remain patient in attack, maintain clarity, and when our attacks are interrupted, we have a plan to neutralize the loss and regain control. This revolves around positioning and the concept of 'attacking while defending'," Milito explained.
Confidence and Tactical Preparation
Joined by forward Hulk, Milito, who has been at the helm since March, expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness. He highlighted their ability to adapt, whether playing in midfield or retreating to reduce defensive gaps.
While confirming that the starting eleven has been decided, Milito chose not to reveal the lineup, stating:
"There will be no surprises, but it’s crucial for the team to remain calm and intelligent throughout the game. The dream of winning the Copa is massive, but we need to play with understanding and purpose."
A Remarkable Campaign
Despite recent struggles in the Brasileirão, where Atlético Mineiro has gone five matches without a win, Milito praised his team’s exceptional performance in the Libertadores. He reflected on their pivotal semifinal victory over River Plate in Buenos Aires, calling it a defining moment:
"After that win, the mindset of the team was transformed, and we were already dreaming of returning to Buenos Aires to play the final."
Milito anticipates a "close, hard-fought, and challenging" final, as is typical in the Libertadores. However, he expressed full confidence in his players' preparation and determination to bring home Atlético Mineiro’s second continental title.
