French Federation to File Complaint Over Racist Chants by Enzo Fernández and Argentine Team
The French Football Federation (FFF) will take legal action against the Argentina team for racist chants.
The French Football Federation (FFF) will take legal action and file a complaint with FIFA over the "racist and discriminatory" chants directed at French players by the Argentine national team players during their locker room celebrations after winning the Copa América by defeating Colombia.
This happened after Chelsea player Enzo Fernández posted a video on Instagram and X showing the Argentine players celebrating and singing a song that referenced the French players and their African heritage. It’s worth noting that this chant was the same one sung by Argentine fans before the World Cup Final in Qatar 2022, where Argentina defeated France.
"Given the seriousness of these shocking comments, which are contrary to the values of sport and human rights, the FFF president has decided to contact his Argentine counterpart and FIFA directly to file a legal complaint for racist and discriminatory remarks," the FFF said in a statement.
"The president of the French Football Federation (FFF), Philippe Diallo, condemns in the strongest terms the unacceptable racist and discriminatory remarks made against the players of the France team as part of a song sung by the players and supporters of the Argentina team," the FFF added.
The words to the chant were: “They play for France, but their parents are from Angola. Their mother is from Cameroon, while their father is from Nigeria. But their passport says French.”
On another note, Enzo Fernández has seven French teammates at Chelsea, and three of them, in particular, have already spoken out about the incident. Axel Disasi, Malo Gusto, and Wesley Fofana unfollowed their Argentine teammate on Instagram after the racist chants in the video. Fofana also posted a video of the incident on X with the caption: "Football in 2024: Uninhibited racism."
