Fenerbahce Abandon Match and Galatasaray Win Turkish Super Cup
Galatasaray faced a youth team from Fenerbahçe after the latter followed through on their threat to field youth players in the Turkish Super Cup final due to their discontent over playing for the trophy just four days before their Conference League playoff against Olympiacos.
At the start of the match, players showed their discontent by standing still, but Galatasaray's forward Mauro Icardi opened the scoring in the first minute. This led to the canaries abandoning the field in protest. Subsequently, the visitors celebrated their fourteenth Super Cup title.
Fenerbahçe's president, Ali Koç, was criticized for losing a title and for his team's actions, which he explained in a press conference: "It's time to reset Turkish football. We're in a period where it's necessary for Turkish football to be rebuilt. There's qualified personnel in Turkey to do this. This is the moment when impartiality, fair competition, and sports ethics should come to the fore."
Don't miss the upcoming Süper Lig match between Karagümrük and Fenerbahce on Sunday, April 14th, starting at 11:55 p.m. ET on beIN SPORTS.
Fenerbahçe, currently second in the Süper Lig with 82 points, will visit Olympiacos of Greece this coming Thursday, April 11, in the first leg of the Conference League quarterfinals.
