Diego Maradona and Pele have been like oil and water since the turn of the century. The two have squared off repeatedly in the press over the past two decades, on a variety of topics but most notably over who is the undisputed king soccer.
That's why it was a pleasant and much-welcomed surprise when the two icons of world soccer finally had some kind words to say about one another. Where did it happen?
The "Match of Friendship!" Where else! The two coached opposing sides in a charity match but despite the competition, or maybe because of it, they had nothing but
"We don't have to be friends. (But) you have to be respectful. And I respect Pele alot because of what he has given football," Maradona said.
"That's one footballer being grateful for another," he continued. "We all love Pele."
For his part, all-time Brazilian great also had a conciliatory message:
"The most important is the message of peace. Many thanks to my friend Maradona for this opportunity," said Pele. "This is a moment of peace."
