Colombia's Coach Lorenzo Opens Up on Team's Struggles Amid Diaz's Family Kidnapping
Luis Díaz is part of the squad that will be facing Brazil and Paraguay in the CONMEBOL qualifiers.
Colombia's coach, Néstor Lorenzo, expressed on Wednesday that he hopes "an incident" like the kidnapping of the father of winger Luis Díaz, who was held by the guerrillas of the National Liberation Army (ELN) for 12 days, does not happen again.
"He felt the strain, especially him and his family, and thankfully it ended well. But I hope such an incident does not happen again; we went through it quite a bit, and I can imagine how the Díaz family has been these days. Thank God everything returned to normal," Lorenzo said in the press conference before Thursday's match against Brazil in Barranquilla.
Díaz, in fact, reunited with his father, Luis Manuel Díaz, on Tuesday in Barranquilla for the first time after joining the Colombian national team for the World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Brazil and Paraguay.
The Liverpool player's father was handed over last Thursday to a humanitarian commission from the UN Mission in Colombia and the Catholic Church in the foothills of the Perijá mountain range, near Barrancas, in the Caribbean department of La Guajira, where he was kidnapped on October 28.
"It was truly an incident that had the entire society on edge, and the group was very attentive, always supporting Lucho and his family. They were constantly in prayer for everything to end well," Lorenzo added.
