Colapinto for Checo Pérez? Verstappen Weighs in on the Possible Arrival of the Argentine at Red Bull
Max Verstappen, Red Bull’s Formula One World Championship leader, praised Argentine driver Franco Colapinto (Williams) this Saturday in São Paulo, Brazil, and commented that his potential arrival at Red Bull ultimately depends on the team’s decision.
“My understanding is that many teams find him very attractive to have... It’ll be up to the team (Red Bull) to see what they want to do,” stated the three-time world champion during a press conference at the Interlagos circuit, on the eve of the São Paulo Grand Prix taking place this Sunday.
Verstappen also highlighted that Colapinto, the first Argentine to complete five Formula One races, is doing “a great job right now.”
However, Verstappen admitted that it’s “difficult” for him to comment on his preference for a teammate, as he’s “busy with other things” in the final stretch of the championship, with only four races left in the season.
The Dutch driver finished third in Saturday’s sprint, behind McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
Colapinto, who placed twelfth, asked Williams earlier this week to release him if there’s no space for him next season.
James Vowles, Williams’ team principal, confirmed on Friday that they are “exploring options with several interested teams” for Colapinto, though he didn’t specify which ones.
A social media post by Red Bull Argentina, featuring emojis suggesting anticipation, has fueled speculation about Colapinto’s potential move to the team.
Interlagos is packed with thousands of Argentine fans sporting Colapinto jerseys, who have traveled especially to see their driver in action.
