Chilean International Loses Foot in Accident After Match
Cristóbal Campos, a Chilean international goalkeeper currently playing for San Antonio Unido in Chile's Primera B, has tragically lost a foot following a severe traffic accident on one of Santiago's ring roads, medical sources reported today.
Campos, who previously guarded the net for Universidad de Chile, crashed his high-end pickup truck on Route 78 near Malloco, about 20 kilometers south of the capital, after losing control in an accident that is currently under investigation.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper had played earlier that day in a match where his team lost to Transandino. According to Lieutenant Sergio Espejo of the Chilean Traffic and Roads Police, excessive speed is being considered as a possible cause of the crash.
As a result of the collision with a dividing wall, Campos was rushed to a medical center (the former Posta Central), where he was admitted in serious condition but without life-threatening injuries. However, part of his right lower limb had to be amputated at the ankle.
Campos, who began his career in Colo Colo's youth divisions, was once on trial at Sporting Lisbon in 2017 but did not secure a place. Two years later, under coach Hernán Caputto, he was promoted to Universidad de Chile's first team, making his debut in 2020 against Internacional de Porto Alegre in a match the Brazilian side won 2-0.
Despite his potential, Universidad de Chile terminated his contract three years later after it was revealed that the Public Prosecutor's Office was investigating him for alleged domestic violence. He then moved to his current club, San Antonio Unido.
Campos was also part of Chile's U-20 squad in the 2019 South American Championship, although he did not play a match. In 2022, he was on the bench for the national team in friendlies against Morocco and Qatar, and he made his senior debut a year later in a 3-0 victory over Cuba.
