Brazilian Dominance in the Copa Libertadores Round of 16
With the Group C conclusion of the Copa Libertadores pending on June 8, the Round of 16 has already seen 14 of the 16 qualifiers determined by this Thursday, highlighting Brazil's overwhelming representation: six teams compared to Argentina's three, and others from Uruguay (five), Bolivia (two), Chile (one), and Colombia (one).
Severe flooding in southern Brazil prevented Gremio from traveling to Chile to face Huachipato and from hosting Estudiantes de La Plata in Porto Alegre. These matches are scheduled for June 4 and 8.
The Strongest, having played all six matches in Group C, leads with 10 points but is vulnerable to the outcomes of Huachipato, which is second with eight points and one game in hand; Gremio, third with six points and two games in hand; and Estudiantes, last with four points but one match remaining.
In the other groups, the situation for the Round of 16 qualifiers has been resolved with six Brazilian teams: Fluminense, Sao Paulo, Palmeiras, and Atlético Mineiro leading Groups A, B, F, and G, respectively.
Botafogo and Flamengo also qualified from the second places of Groups D and E.
If Gremio wins the two remaining matches, they will lead Group C with 12 points, ensuring Brazil a full contingent of seven teams in the Round of 16.
