Belgium Protests Over Courtois Absence from EURO 2024
The Belgian press is buzzing with praise for Real Madrid's goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, after his crucial role in their UEFA Champions League final win, and they're lamenting his absence from Belgium's squad for the 2024 Euros in Germany due to his strained relationship with coach Domenico Tedesco.
"Dear Domenico, you have four days to convince Thibaut," headlines an article on the sports paper "La Dernière Heure Les Sports" website this morning. The article urges the coach to mend his relationship with the goalkeeper before finalizing the Euro squad, which can be modified until June 8, the UEFA-imposed deadline.
On the other hand, the newspaper "Le Soir" blames Courtois, criticizing that his absence from Tedesco's preliminary squad announced this Tuesday is due to the goalkeeper's "out-of-place ego." Despite the criticism, they also praise his performance in Madrid's final against Borussia Dortmund (2-0), crediting him for keeping Madrid in the game until halftime.
"Solid with his feet, quick in his interventions, and sly in every duel, the wall of the first half was not yellow but green, like the jersey of the man who won't defend Belgium's colors in the next match," wrote "Le Soir," referencing the color of Courtois' kit from yesterday.
The French-speaking Belgian broadcaster RTBF lauds the goalkeeper for his form after returning from two long-term injuries that caused him to miss most of the season. Courtois has played four league games and one Champions League game in this final stretch of the season.
"The record is simply impeccable: 5 games, 0 goals conceded, and 424 minutes of unbeaten play. All the more reason to lament his absence for the Euro 2024..." highlights RTBF in their digital edition this Sunday.
Courtois fell out with Tedesco a year ago when the coach, who took over after Spaniard Roberto Martínez left, made a gesture that Courtois perceived as disrespectful to his status. He left the team camp, and the tension between them has remained high, coinciding with Courtois' injury spell.
Despite being medically cleared and having played several league matches and the Champions League final, Courtois is unlikely to be with the Red Devils at the Euros, as he announced last December he would skip this tournament but remain available for future selections.
"He was honest, he was clear. He knows his body (...) The latest information we have is that he is not ready for the Euros," stated Tedesco this Tuesday at a press conference after announcing his preliminary squad for a tournament where Belgium will face Slovakia, Romania, and Ukraine in the group stage.
Koen Casteels (Wolfsburg) will be Belgium's starting goalkeeper for Tedesco's first major tournament as coach, after the Qatar World Cup debacle ended Roberto Martínez's era, which saw excellent results but no trophies with the best generation of Belgian players ever.
Courtois, 32, apologized in December for storming out of the team camp in June 2023 after not receiving the captain's armband in Kevin de Bruyne's absence, who usually captains the team under Tedesco.
"It was a bad decision to leave after the Austria match. I would like to apologize to the team and especially the fans. I believe these two groups were the most shocked. Therefore, I apologize 100% and I am sorry," he said.
However, their relationship worsened again last March when Courtois commented with three long-nosed emojis on social media platform X under a video of Tedesco claiming he had "tried everything" to mend the situation with the goalkeeper.
