Alex Morgan, U.S. Soccer Legend, Retires from Football
Alex Morgan, the legendary forward of the United States women's national team, announced this Thursday her retirement from professional soccer and that she will play her last match this Sunday with her San Diego Wave in the NWSL.
Morgan, 35, was a two-time World Cup champion with the U.S. national team, for which she scored 123 goals and provided 53 assists.
The Wave forward was one of the main protagonists of the golden era of U.S. soccer alongside Megan Rapinoe, who retired from football in 2023.
"I have grown in this team; it was much more than soccer. It was about the friendships and the enormous respect and support among us, the work to boost global investment in women's sports, and the key moments of success on and off the field," Morgan said in statements published by the United States Soccer Federation.
"I am incredibly honored to have represented this badge for 15 years," she added.
Morgan played 22 matches in World Cups and was crowned champion in 2015 and 2019. She also won the Olympic gold medal at London 2012.
The American announced this same Thursday that she is pregnant and will be a mother for the second time.
Her last match will be this Sunday with the Wave against the North Carolina Courage.
