Ivory Coast stage epic comeback against Gabon at AFCON 2025
The group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations came to an end with a match featuring Gabon, who were hoping to pull off a surprise against Ivory Coast.
The defending champions, Ivory Coast, arrived as clear favorites, but suffered greatly and needed a dramatic comeback to finish as group leaders and advance to the Round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Gabon tasted an upset against Ivory Coast
In the 11th minute, Guelor Kanga capitalized on a defensive error by Ivory Coast to spring the surprise, calmly finishing to make it 1–0.
The Elephants tried to respond quickly, but a combination of a possible penalty overturned due to an earlier offside and a lack of finishing kept them at bay. The shock deepened when Bouanga scored in the 21st minute.
Diakité attempted to pull one back with a powerful strike that was well dealt with by the defense. Despite appearing vulnerable, the Panthers held firm against Ivory Coast’s attacking pressure, as the Elephants battled for group supremacy with Cameroon.
Ivory Coast show champion’s reaction
Ivory Coast finally responded with a hope-inspiring goal from Jean-Philippe Krasso, giving the Elephants life just before halftime. Clech Loufilou then had a golden chance to put Gabon further ahead, but missed a remarkable opportunity.
The Elephants proved they cannot be written off and found the equalizer from a set piece. That was only the beginning, as goals from Guessand and Touré completed an unthinkable comeback.
Who will Ivory Coast face in the Round of 16?
With the victory, the defending AFCON champions finished as Group F leaders.
Ivory Coast will continue their title defense in the Round of 16 against Burkina Faso.
