Tunisia ended a 12-year opening-game drought with a win over Uganda in AFCON 2025. Elias Achouri starred with a brace as the Eagles of Carthage displayed offensive firepower.
Tunisia starts off AFCON 2025 with full force
The Eagles of Carthage returned to the continental stage with a commanding performance, defeating Uganda 3-1 in their Group C opener. The victory not only ended a 12-year streak without winning the first game at the Africa Cup of Nations but also sent a clear message: Tunisia is ready to fight for the title. From the first minutes, the North Africans displayed tactical control and offensive aggression, dictating the tempo and pressuring Uganda, who, despite holding 51% possession, could never turn it into real danger.

Elias Achouri and Ellyes Skhiri, stars of the match
The scoring opened early thanks to Ellyes Skhiri, who connected a precise header from a corner in the 10th minute, putting the hosts ahead. The lead doubled before halftime with a methodical strike from Achouri, following a cross from Ali Al-Abdi, showcasing Tunisia’s efficiency on set pieces and clinical finishing inside the box. Achouri appeared again in the 64th minute, capitalizing on a mistake by goalkeeper Salim Magoola, sealing the third goal with a flawless finish. His performance confirmed he is the key figure in Tunisia’s attack and one of the standout players of AFCON 2025.
Uganda tries to respond but meets a wall
Ugandan coach Paul Put made strategic substitutions at halftime, bringing on Travis Mutyaba and Denis Omedi to inject freshness and offensive depth. However, their efforts were insufficient to break through Tunisia’s solid defense. Only in stoppage time did Omedi score a consolation goal, which wasn’t enough to challenge the Eagles’ dominance. Defensive discipline and control of key moments kept Tunisia in command throughout the match.
Tunisia takes the lead in Group C
With this win, Tunisia tops Group C on goal difference, followed by Nigeria, who defeated Tanzania 2-1. The victory boosts morale and confidence for Sami Trabelsi and his squad, who now prepare for a crucial clash against Nigeria in Fes. Uganda, meanwhile, must regroup quickly ahead of the derby against Tanzania in Rabat, seeking points to avoid a discouraging start in the tournament.
Tunisia’s AFCON 2025 debut confirms that the Eagles of Carthage combine strategy, efficiency, and attacking talent, leaving no doubt they are a team to fear in this edition of the continental competition.
