Didier Deschamps reacts to CAF decision to award AFCON 2025 title to Morocco
France head coach Didier Deschamps commented on the controversial decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to award the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 title to Morocco.
France head coach Didier Deschamps commented on the controversial decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to award the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 title to Morocco.
The French manager spoke to the media while announcing the squad for upcoming friendlies against Colombia and Brazil, but was also asked about the ruling involving Senegal.
What did Deschamps say about Morocco’s AFCON title?
"At the very least, it is surprising. But these are legal matters that are not within my competence," the coach said.
Deschamps chose not to go deeper into the controversy, making it clear that it falls outside his responsibilities.
Why did CAF award Morocco the AFCON 2025 title?
CAF’s Appeals Committee decided to sanction Senegal, stripping them of the title and awarding it to Morocco.
The decision followed an incident where Senegal players left the pitch for several minutes without the referee’s authorization.
Although the players, led by Sadio Mané, returned and won the match on the field, CAF ruled the action as a violation of its regulations.
The protest was triggered by refereeing decisions, including a penalty missed by Brahim Díaz.
Moroccan federation supports CAF decision
The Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) welcomed the ruling, while clarifying that their intention was not to undermine their opponent.
“It aligns with respect for the regulations and the stability necessary for the proper development of international competitions,” the federation said in a statement.
